This is such a classic.
So classic, that I never posted it before!
Meatballs with peas is something that I grew up eating (although I probably didn’t appreciate it as much as a child) and that ALL my kids love eating.
Not sure why I don’t make it super often.
It is simple to make, requires super minimal dishes, and satisfies everybody!
Meat mixture:
1 lb minced beef
1 egg
1/2 cup breadcrumbs
1/4 tsp allspice
1/2 tsp paprika
1/2 tsp cumin
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1 tbsp oil
Salt and pepper
Peas sauce:
1 onion, diced
1 bag frozen peas (750g)
1/3 cup chopped cilantro, packed
1/2 lemon, juiced
1 tsp paprika
1 tsp cumin
1 tsp garlic powder
Salt and pepper
DIRECTIONS:
Combine meat ingredients in a mixing bowl and mix. My trick is that i add a couple tbsp of water to the meat if i want to make it softer.
Form meatballs.
Heat a pan over medium heat. I used an enamelled cast iron pan because i like how food simmers in it and the sear comes out great. Add enough oil to lightly coat the bottom of the pan only.
Add meatballs and sear them on all sides, making sure not to overcrowd the pan bc they get harder to flip! Once seared, set aside on a plate.
In that same pan, add onion. Saute until brown, then add peas. Stir them for a few minutes until totally thawed.
Add seasoning to peas. Let the sauce simmer for a few minutes then return meatballs to the pan.
Turn heat down to low. Cover the pan and let them simmer for 30-40 minutes.
Serve over hot rice.
Enjoy,
Guila
