"Make your own Sandwich Board" - Smoked Meat Edition (+ BEST tips to make AMAZING boards)

Guila Sandroussy

The easiest way to have something ready to go throughout the busy Purim day. Set it up early and your guest can eat from it throughout the day.

No need to reheat, no need to replenish… you actually don’t even need to be there!

The easiest, quickest way impress your guest is by making a board! I have made sooo many of them in the past:

  • Snack boards

  • Vegetable grazing boards

  • Meat boards

  • Cheese boards

  • Dried fruits and nuts boards

  • Channuka boards

  • Candy boards

You name it, i probably put it on a board 😂 and they are all the selling point on any buffet!

You can plan them in advance and buy things specifically for it, or you can put it together last minute, grabbing the stuff you have in your pantry (best way to clean it up!). You can also make one as a hostess gift or as a potluck add on. It makes the best gift!

The thing is, they are beautiful to look at and since I strongly believe that people “eat with their eyes” first, your guest will be drawn to it much more. Its the same feeling as being served assorted chocolates from a box. Part of the experience is having the thrilling feeling when picking out your snacks from the board!

A few tips when putting together a board:

  1. Think in color. If you want a monochromatic look, stick to the same colors. If not, try not putting 2 items of the same color too close together for visual interest.

  2. Include bowls, mini sauce dippers, utensils. It looks more visually appealing when not everything is directly on the board.  Experiment with layering and stacking ingredients to create depth and visual appeal.

  3. Think texture and shapes. Incorporate a variety of textures, such as crunchy, creamy, and chewy, to add visual interest and dimension to the board. Use a mix of colorful ingredients and different shapes to create contrast and diversity on the board. Include fruits, vegetables, nuts, and spreads to add variety.

  4. Pick the size of the board depending on the amount of items you need to include on your board. If you are serving a big crowd, you would probably need to make it a little larger.

  5. Stay away from symmetry. We want it to look very random, but still giving thought to where each item should be placed.

  6. Start with filling bowls and then add in your bigger items. Once it is set up, you can go ahead and fill all the gaps arounds with other smaller items.

  7. Fill the board evenly, leaving no empty spaces, but avoid overcrowding to maintain an organized and visually pleasing layout.

  8. Most importantly, don't be afraid to play around with it. No boards are alike and that is the beauty of it!

Hope these tips will help you put together your very own board, whether it be one for Purim, or for some other time!
